Las Palomas Resort’s Beautiful Pools
Personally, I love the beach (especially if I’m in a beach town, like Puerto Peñasco).
BUT… the pools at Las Palomas are so stunning and expansive, that I found myself lounging poolside for almost as much time as I spent in the sand.
The resort has several pools, including a lazy river, a children’s pool, and a large infinity pool.
The pools are surrounded by loungers and cabanas, creating great spots to soak up the sun and relax.
The pool area is also home to a swim-up bar, where guests can enjoy cocktails and snacks while lounging in the water.
Beach Activities at Las Palomas
Las Palomas is situated on a stunning stretch of sandy beach, which is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. You’ll love how clean and blue the waters of the Sea of Cortez are here!
The resort offers a range of beach activities, and provides beach towels, umbrellas, and chairs to all guests.
While my favorite thing to do on the beach in Rocky Point is listen to my podcasts 😀 other people might enjoy some of these available activities at Las Palomas:
- Jet Skiing: Las Palomas offers jet ski rentals. You can explore the Sea of Cortez on your own or with a guide. The cost was $45 for a half-hour rental. Availability will depend on the tide.
- Kayaking: Guests can also rent kayaks and paddle around in the calm waters of the Sea of Cortez.
- Paddleboarding: Paddleboarding is another popular activity at Las Palomas. The resort provides paddleboards for rent, and you can try your skills on the calm waters of the Sea of Cortez.
- Banana Boat Rides: There’s often a banana boat floating out in front of Las Palomas. During our visit, rides were $7 per person. Its availability will depend on the tide.
- Beach Volleyball: Las Palomas has a beach volleyball court setup right on the beach.
- Tidal Pools: During low tide, parts of the rocky reef will be exposed and you can explore the marine life caught in the tidal pools.
- Massages: You’ll often find a masseuse with a table setup down near the water.
- Sunsets on the Beach: By far, the best beach activity in my book!

Las Palomas FAQ’s
Let’s tackle a few of the frequently asked questions about Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort in Rocky Point.
Does Las Palomas allow Dogs?
Some units at Las Palomas are designated as “pet-friendly,” but for the most part, Las Palomas does not allow pets. Check with management when you book to make sure that’s the case for your particular rental.
Is Las Palomas an All Inclusive Resort?
No, and Rocky Point really isn’t known for all-inclusive resorts the way Cancun is.
Do You need a Passport for Las Palomas?
I would never leave the United States without a passport.
How Many Rooms does Las Palomas Have?
Las Palomas has around 800 condos, with 450 rentals. Their availability depends on the season.
The condos range in size from one to five bedrooms!
When is the Best Time to go to Puerto Peñasco?
People who live in Rocky Point see March as the month when they’re inundated with young spring breakers. By April and May, it’s more families visiting town.
Even in the winter months, the sun will shine and the days will be mild. At night, it gets pretty cold (for a beach town in Mexico) but spots like Wrecked at the Reef will adjust and light bonfires to keep the crowds toasty.
Also, consider the activities you’d like to do. For instance, whale watching is really only good in March and April.
Safety & Security at Las Palomas
While many Americans (especially from Arizona) don’t think twice about traveling south of the border into Mexico, others have legitimate safety concerns. Rocky Point is an hour’s drive south of the border in Lukeville, Arizona.
I get a lot of questions about safety in Mexico, so I looked into what Las Palomas offers its guests in terms of security. The measures taken to ensure the well-being of guests include:
- Security personnel: The resort employs a team of security personnel who are trained to monitor the property and respond to any security concerns. You’ll see them at the entry gate, in the buildings, and walking around the property.
- Surveillance cameras: Las Palomas has installed surveillance cameras throughout the property to monitor activity and ensure the safety of guests.
- Controlled access: The resort has controlled access to the property, with gates and security checkpoints to monitor who enters and exits. You’ll have to show the guards at the gate your wrist band or identification each time you enter.
- Room safes: Each room at Las Palomas is equipped with a room safe for guests to secure their valuables.
- Emergency response: The resort has an emergency response plan in place in case of natural disasters, medical emergencies, or other unexpected events.
We really felt entirely safe the entire time during our visit in 2023.
Is Rocky Point Safe?
Like any travel destination, Rocky Point has its own set of safety concerns. In general, it’s considered a safe destination for travelers who take basic precautions and use common sense.
Sadly, the only recent deaths I’ve heard about in Puerto Peñasco were of two adults from Northern Arizona, who drowned while kayaking.
Over the years, Americans driving through Sonora have complained far more about Mexican police stopping them for speeding and demanding bribes, than any kind of cartel activity.
The US Department of State has issued a travel advisory for Mexico, including Rocky Point, due to high levels of crime in certain areas. However, the advisory does not discourage travel to Rocky Point, particularly for those staying at the resorts and in Sonora’s touristy areas.
Here are some tips to help you stay safe while visiting Rocky Point:
- Stay in reputable accommodations: Choose a reputable hotel or resort, such as Las Palomas, that has a good track record for safety and security.
- Use official taxis: Use official taxis or pre-arranged transportation to avoid any issues with unlicensed taxi drivers.
- Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings, particularly at night or in crowded areas, and avoid carrying large sums of cash or valuables.
- Avoid driving at night, if possible.
Wrap: Staying at Las Palomas Resort, Rocky Point
While Las Palomas isn’t an all-inclusive resort, there’s enough going on right on the grounds that you’d never have to leave! Still, it’s worth venturing over to Wrecked at the Reef and The Malecon during your stay in Rocky Point.
