Chapung Sebali is one of Bali’s eco resorts, perfect for travelers seeking a luxurious and serene retreat.

You’ll find a blend of modern comforts and traditional Balinese charm.

During our time there, I found it to be a great resort option for couples, families, and solo travelers looking for a high-end experience in a picturesque setting on Bali.

Bali Basics

While you can rent a car or bike to get around Bali, I’d recommend booking a driver. Unless you’re staying for a while and familiar with the winding roads, it’s less of a hassle to just hire someone who knows the destinations and traffic patterns.

The drivers in Bali are affordable (under $50/day), and flexible in terms of times and desired destinations.

Also, it’s easiest if you get your visa entry secured before your trip. It’ll save you time when you land at the airport!

Chapung Sebali Eco Resort Location

The resort is in Ubud, in the central part of Bali, about an hour’s drive from the airport.

This interactive map is centered on the resort. You can move it around to scope out the location, and also click it to check the rates for your dates:

The Chapung Sebali resort is in the hills, overlooking the lush rice paddies and tropical forests of the Wos River Valley.

It’s a peaceful, serene environment, which is both far enough from tourist crowds and yet still close to destinations you’ll want to visit.

Ubud is known as the cultural heart of Bali, and is close to temples, rice terraces, hikes, and waterfalls.

The Resort Suites & Villas

The Resort’s Eco-Friendly & Sustainable Practices

Chapung Sebali, like many luxury resorts in Bali, has taken steps toward sustainability and eco-friendliness.

The resort’s design integrates the property’s buildings with its natural surroundings.   This includes the use of reclaimed ironwood, along with colors and textures chosen to blend into the surrounding rainforest in Bali.

The villas and suites are built with a number of locally-sourced materials, including Balinese native hardwoods, volcanic stone, and bamboo.

You’ll find: many of the luxury eco-resorts in Ubud aim to reduce their carbon footprint through reducing plastic usage, recycling programs, water and energy conservation, and sourcing locally.

The Resort’s Garden

One of my favorite parts of the resort property is the on-site garden.  It may seem simple, but I always love when a hotel grows its own vegetables and herbs.

During our trip, the garden was producing fresh tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers, among other leafy greens and herbs.

The Chapung Sebali Resort’s Restaurants

Chapung Sebali has multiple dining options, including Jungle Fish, a poolside restaurant and bar known for its vibrant atmosphere and scenic views.

The resort’s restaurants typically serve a mix of international and Balinese cuisine, focusing on fresh and locally sourced ingredients.

The Upper Deck

The main restaurant serves global and traditional Balinese dishes, from a deck overlooking the river valley and rainforest below.

They welcome anyone staying on Bali, in addition to the hotel guests.

The menu includes options for any diet, and many of the dishes are served with vegetables and herbs grown from the resort’s garden.

And you can’t pass up the dessert:

The Jungle Fish

The Jungle Fish is one of the best-known pool bars in Ubud, and maybe in all of Bali.

It’s a lengthy bar/restaurant, which runs along the large infinity pool at the resort, overlooking the valley.

They serve drinks all day, along with snacks and specials poolside.

Breakfast

Breakfast is always my favorite meal at a hotel, and Chapung Sebali did not disappoint. They serve a full buffet of fruits and grains, plus a menu of breakfast delights.

Each morning, I had an omelet, called the Mexican White Egg, full of spicy veggies. I added their Jungle Acai Bowl, which is a perfect size, topped with homemade granola.

Sites to See Near the Eco Resort

I love the natural beauty in the Ubud area, and it provides a number of different kinds of things to do nearby.

The Tegalalang Rice Terrace is one of Bali’s most famous rice terraces, known for its stunning landscapes and intricate tiered design. There’s a hiking trail through the fields, which is open to the public.  This was a favorite stop of ours.  It was nearly empty early in the morning at sunrise!

A few other options include:

  • Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary: A lush forest with ancient temples and hundreds of macaque monkeys.
  • Ubud Art Market (Pasar Seni Ubud): A bustling market where you can find a variety of handcrafted goods, including textiles, jewelry, wood carvings, and paintings.
  • Campuhan Ridge Walk: A scenic walking trail that offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and rice fields. The trail is relatively easy and is popular for early morning or late afternoon walks.
  • Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave): An archaeological site featuring a cave temple with intricate carvings. It’s a place of historical and cultural significance, with a unique atmosphere.

Guldsmeden Eco Resorts and Hotels

Guldsmeden Hotels is a Danish-based hotel chain, which owns and operates Chapung Sebali.  It’s known for a strong commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices.

Their beautiful and sustainably-focused Manon Les Suites hotel in Copenhagen is another favorite of mine, complete with a Bali-themed pool in the interior courtyard.

FAQs About Bali Eco Resorts

Let’s go over a few more frequently-asked-questions about eco resorts in the Ubud area.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

The monsoon season brings rain to Bali from October through April.  The driest months are July and August, but they’re also the most crowded.  Many locals I spoke to say May, June, and maybe September are the best times to visit.

What makes Ubud a good place to stay?

I love the Ubud area. In addition to being surrounded by lush landscapes, it’s close to outdoorsy things I like doing.  Plus, if you’re into wellness, it’s known for yoga, meditation, and other activities for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Foodies will enjoy the diverse range of dining options from tiny local spots to high-end restaurants.

Plus it’s a central spot on Bali, so despite the (at times) horrific traffic, many popular destinations are an hour or less away.

Do I need a visa to visit Bali?

Yes, you’ll need a tourist visa, which is best to get before your trip. The website is easy to use, and the visa will be emailed to you within a day or two. If you forget, you can get a visa when you land at the airport, but it’ll likely involve waiting in a lengthy line!

Can I eat at Chapung Sebali’s restaurant if I’m not a resort guest?

Yes, the Upper Deck is open to the public, and also hosts special events.  It’s probably best to make a reservation if you’re not a guest.

Are Bali eco resorts expensive?

Compared to what you might pay in other countries, the cost of a luxury suite on Bali is a fraction of the cost. You’ll be astounded by the comparison.

Is Chapung Sebali good for couples?

Yes, and they have special options if you’re looking for a romantic retreat.

The suites are very private, so even though they’re all attached, you’ll feel like you have that part of the jungle to yourself.

Is Chapung Sebali good for families with children?

Yes, we saw several families with children at the resort, from babies to toddlers to teens!

Wrap: Guldsmeden’s Eco Resort on Bali

I’ve loved all of the unique Guldsmeden hotels I’ve been to, and look forward to seeing the entire collection around the world over time!  It’s clear the owners have a special place in their hearts for Bali, since the company’s flagship property in Copenhagen, Manon Les Suites, is home to a famous Bali-inspired indoor pool.

I love how they combine luxury with sustainability at their properties, and would recommend Chapung Sebali to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway on Bali!

Their Sustainable Management Plan says it all, noting:  Guldsmeden Hotels strive to minimize their environmental footprint, enhance the guest experience through sustainable luxury, and contribute positively to the local community and the planet.

Nearby Waterfalls & Sites to See:

Check out our posts on waterfalls on Bali. Many of them are in the same area, but with the roads and congestion it can take a while to drive between them.

I’d also suggest spending the morning at Cretya Ubud, a luxury day club. Great prices, beautiful pools, and a sprawling property to explore!
