Costa Rica is known for its stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and friendly, welcoming people. While I think you’d have a good time visiting any time of year, December stands out as one of the best months for travelers.

Where to Stay in Costa Rica
I have to admit: I’m partial to Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, even though it’s rainier and the December weather is better for the beaches on the Pacific Coast!

- Rainfall: December falls within the region’s “green season,” so be prepared for occasional rain showers. These rains are often short and intense, and the skies will clear afterwards.
- Beaches: Despite the rain, December is an excellent time to visit Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast. The beaches are unique: One has black sand, while another is home to a famous shipwreck!

- Sanctuary: I’d also definitely recommend a stop at the Jaguar Rescue Center to see the monkeys, sloths, and other animals in rehab.

- Activities: People visiting Arenal in December are likely heading to its volcano to hike around. It’s also a great time to relax in the natural hot springs, take canopy tours, or go horseback riding. With the clear skies in December, stargazing at night is also very popular around Arenal!

The West Coast of Costa Rica, including popular destinations like Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio, offers a different climate compared to the Caribbean Coast.

With its extensive coastline along both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! As I discussed above, you’ll find different kinds of weather on each coast, but honestly- December will be beautiful on either coast.
- Popular Beach Destinations: Some of the popular beach destinations include Puerto Viejo, Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, and Santa Teresa. You can relax on the sandy shores, surf, or go snorkeling and scuba diving in crystal-clear waters.
- Turtle Nesting: December is also the season for sea turtles to nest on Costa Rica’s shores. You might witness them laying eggs, or see the hatchlings crawl toward the waves for their first time. I couldn’t believe our luck when we found conservationists releasing newly-hatched turtles into the Caribbean!

- Arenal Volcano: Arenal is one of the most iconic volcanoes in Costa Rica. While it’s not currently erupting, the volcano and its surroundings offer a range of activities. - Poás Volcano: Poás is known for its active crater with a constantly boiling lake of sulfuric acid. The park around Poás Volcano is easily accessible from San Jose.

- Harvest Season: December is also coffee beah harvest season in some regions. Technically, workers will be picking the ‘cherries’ off the plants in the fields, which then go into the roasting process!

Costa Rica is full of wildlife encounters year-round. Driving around, you’ll see signs, warning you to watch out for sloths and other wildlife in the road.
- Bird Watching: Migratory birds from North America can be spotted in Costa Rica during December. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the increased avian diversity.
- Whale Watching: The Pacific coast becomes a hotspot for humpback whale sightings in December. You may even witness their spectacular breaching behavior.
As I mentioned earlier, I’d definitely recommend a visit to the Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo! There are no jaguars, but it’s full of injured sloths, monkeys, and other Costa Rican wildlife. You’ll learn a lot, and love hearing the stories about the animals in rehab.
Packing for Costa Rica in December
